There’s no question that gardening is an art. In fact, some of the most interesting and inspiring gardens belong to artists. San Diego has no shortage of wonderful gardens made by artists, five of which we visit in this show. We hear about how they use space, how they use color, how they select plants, and how they incorporate objects, sculpture, and other art pieces into their gardens.
Glass mosaic artist Cherie LaPorte favors hanging glass pieces that capture and reflect the light in her very untamed, lakeside garden. Her glass mosaics light up the landscape, and the interior of her studio as well. Mixed media artist Betsy Schulz shows us the many clever ways she deals with form and function, and how parts and pieces from her commissions cycle through her carefully manicured and controlled garden.
Ceramicist Laird Plumleigh has a garden filled with cacti, succulents, and unusual plants that reflect the colors and textures of his home. His tiles and sculptures “planted” throughout his garden. All are in colors he draws from the tumbled glass and rock he encounters at the beaches where he surfs.
The garden belonging to sculptor Erik Gronborg and painter Irina Gronborg is home to multiple plant collections laid out in a design inspired by classic gardens but interpreted in a way uniquely the Gronborgs’ own. Their collaboration and innovation go back decades, to the time when their now totally innovative home and garden were once a standard tract house with a rectangle of grass in front and one in back. Just wait till you see how it looks now!
