Episode 105: Cycle and Recycle

Watch the Episode

What goes around comes around; that’s what recycling is all about.  Recycling is a natural part of the growing process, whether its composting waste at home to big municipal recyclers, reusing and reclaiming water to irrigate plants, or finding novel new for organic waste products , Host Nan Sterman show us how San Diego recycles green waster and gray water, to put them back to work growing more.

In this episode, we visit:

  • Mountain Meadow Mushroom in Escondido where stable bedding from the County Fairgrounds is recycled into compost used to grow mushrooms, which then becomes mushroom compost available to gardeners across the region.
  • Red Worm Wiggler Farm where red wiggler worms recycle manure from the farm’s animal menagerie into a wonderful OMRI certified organic soil amendment
  • El Corazon green waste recycling facility in Oceanside where Christmas trees are recycled into landscape and garden mulch
  • The 4S Ranch Waste Water Recycling Facility where sewage from homes and businesses in 4S Ranch is recycled into purple pipe water, used to irrigate local parks, roadways, golf courses, schoolyards and more.
  • Nan’s home where greywater expert Greg Bullock installs a greywater system in Nan’s laundry room to divert washer water to irrigate her fruit trees.
